(5 abr. 1827, Upton, Essex, Inglaterra–10 feb. 1912, Walmer, Kent).

Cirujano y científico médico británico. Obtuvo su grado de médico en Oxford en 1852 y fue ayudante de James Syme, el mejor profesor de cirugía de su época. En 1861 fue designado cirujano de la Glasgow Royal Infirmary, donde observó que un 45–50% de los pacientes amputados morían de sepsis (infección generalizada). Postuló inicialmente que el polvo del aire podía ser la causa, pero en 1865 se enteró de la teoría de Louis Pasteur, de que las infecciones son producidas por microorganismos. Empleando fenol como antiséptico, Lister redujo la mortalidad en su servicio en un 15% en cuatro años. La mayoría de los cirujanos no se convenció sino hasta que resultó exitosa una operación bajo condiciones asépticas, ampliamente publicitada. Cuando se retiró en 1893, su principio había sido aceptado casi universalmente. Es considerado el fundador de la medicina antiséptica.
